چکیده

Although lateral asymmetries in orienting behavior are evident across species and have been linked to interhemispheric asymmetries in dopamine signaling, the relative contribution of attentional versus motoric processes remains unclear. Here we took a cognitive genetic approach to adjudicate between roles for dopamine in attentional versus response selection. A sample of nonclinical adult humans (N = 518) performed three cognitive tasks (spatial attentional competition, spatial cueing, and flanker tasks) that varied in the degree to which they required participants to resolve attentional or response competition. All participants were genotyped for two putatively functional tandem repeat polymorphisms of the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1; SLC6A3), which are argued to influence the level of available synaptic dopamine and confer risk to disorders of inattention. DAT1 genotype modulated the task-specific effects of the various task-irrelevant stimuli across both the spatial competition and spatial cueing but not flanker tasks. Specifically, compared with individuals carrying one or two copies of the 10-repeat DAT1 allele, individuals without this allele demonstrated an immunity to distraction, such that response times were unaffected by increases in the number of distractor stimuli, particularly when these were presented predominantly in the left hemifield. All three genotype groups exhibited uniform costs of resolving leftward response selection in a standard flanker task. None of these significant effects could be explained by speed-accuracy trade-offs, suggesting that participants without the 10-repeat allele of the DAT1 tandem repeat polymorphism possess an enhanced attentional ability to suppress task-irrelevant stimuli in the left hemifield.

Effects of aging and involuntary capture of attention on event-related potentials associated with the processing of and the response to a target stimulus

The main aim of the present study was to assess whether aging modulates the effects of involuntary capture of attention by novel stimuli on performance, and on event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with target processing (N2b and P3b) and subsequent response processes (stimulus-locked Lateralized Readiness Potential -sLRP- and response-locked Lateralized Readiness Potential -rLRP-). An aud...

Association between ABCB1-T1236C Polymorphism and Drug-Resistant Epilepsy in Iranian Female Patients

Background: One third of epileptic patients are resistant to several anti-epileptic drugs (AED). P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is an efflux transporter encoded by ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) gene that excludes drugs from the cells and plays a significant role in AEDs resistance. Over-expression of P-gp could be a result of polymorphisms in ABCB1 gene. We studied the association of...

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in the Dopamine Receptor Type 3 (DOP3) Candidate Gene Associated with Varroa Destructor Resistance in Honeybee

Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: Varroa infestation is undoubtedly the greatest threat and challenge facing Apiculture today. This external parasite inevitably lives in the bee colony and causes irreparable damage to its colony and the subsequent honey production. One of the proposed strategies in this regard is the use of pesticides, which have a negative impact on the health of ...

Dopamine transporter genotype conveys familial risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder through striatal activation.

OBJECTIVE The dopamine transporter (DAT1) gene has been implicated in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although the mechanism by which it exerts its effects remains unknown. The polymorphism associated with ADHD has been shown to affect expression of the transporter in vitro and in vivo. Dopamine transporters are predominantly expressed in the striatum, but also in the cerebella...

Response to methylphenidate in adults with ADHD is associated with a polymorphism in SLC6A3 (DAT1).

In this pharmacogenetic study in adults with ADHD (n = 42), a stratified analysis was performed of the association between response to methylphenidate (MPH), assessed under double-blind conditions, and polymorphisms in the genes encoding the dopamine transporter, SLC6A3 (DAT1), the norepinephrine transporter, SLC6A2 (NET), and the dopamine receptor D4, DRD4. The VNTR polymorphism in the 3' untr...
